GP (General Practitioner)
In New Zealand, everyday medical care usually starts with a GP (General Practitioner). A GP is a family doctor who handles common illnesses, prescriptions, specialist referrals, and similar needs.
TIP
After arriving in New Zealand, it is recommended to register with a clinic near your home or school as your GP.
Registering With a GP
- Choose a clinic near your home or school and bring materials such as your passport and student ID to register
- After registration, that clinic becomes your "family doctor"; contact them first to book an appointment for everyday health issues
Appointments and Visits
- How to book: by phone or through the clinic's online system
- Visit process: arrive at the clinic at the appointment time -> check in at reception -> wait -> enter the consultation room
Fees
- Citizens/residents: some items may be subsidized
- Student visa holders: usually need to pay out of pocket. If you have student insurance, you may be able to claim reimbursement (see Medical Reimbursement)
